New York: A Cultural Gem

New York City goes by many names—the Big Apple, America’s City, but the Empire State is much more than just the city. The state bustles with life and vibrancy at every corner. It’s the perfect place for active retirees looking to cultivate existing interests in sports, the arts, and/or history and culture. Here are some key reasons to consider making New York your new home:

1. Visit some of the country’s most renowned attractions. New York has long been known as a hotspot for tourists, and for good reason. It houses a significant amount of historical landmarks and monuments, including the Stonewall National Monument, the Statue of Liberty, Niagara Falls, Fire Island, and the African Burial Ground National Monument. And once you’ve consumed all the historical facts you can stand, take a trip to Broadway and check out the shows currently in production. With such rich culture just a stone’s throw away, you’ll find no shortage of things to do and see when the mood strikes you.

2. Marvel at its natural wonders. Despite its image as a bustling urban metropolis, New York also features all sorts of natural beauty. You’ll be able to find 578 miles worth of waterfront and more than 70,000 miles of streams and rivers. New York is also home to Adirondack Park, a national park known as being larger than the Olympic, Yellowstone, Glacier, Grand Canyon, and Yosemite Parks put together.

3. It’s incredibly diverse. There’s no arguing that New York is quite the melting pot. People of all cultures reside within the state’s borders, from French Canadians to African-Americans, Greek Americans to Chinese Americans, Italian Americans to Jamaican Americans, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Peruvians, and so much more.

Because of this, you can also expect to enjoy a wide range of cuisines from all of these cultures, and even a blend of cultures via interesting and delicious fusion cuisine. If the idea of living in an ethnically diverse area appeals to you, New York is the place to be.

4. You won’t need a car. While you can definitely still drive around New York if you’d like, the state boasts both the oldest and one of the country’s broadest transportation infrastructures. Almost everyone knows about their subway line, which spans across a range of individual but connected systems within the state and also across New Jersey.

5. It’s a sports lover’s paradise. It may serve as no surprise that New York hosts a broad range of sports teams. It’s home to the New York Yankees (baseball), the Buffalo Bills (football), the New York Mets (baseball), the Brooklyn Nets (basketball), the New York Rangers (ice hockey), the New York Knicks (basketball), the New York Islanders (ice hockey), the Buffalo Sabres (ice hockey), and the New York City FC (soccer).

The state has also hosted the Winter Olympics twice, the first time in the year 1932 and again in 1980, and houses numerous national sports halls of fame.

If you’re looking to retire somewhere with all sorts of things to see and do and new and interesting faces to meet, consider settling down in New York.
