Missouri: Rich Culture, Richer Barbecue

What could be a better area to settle in than the Midwest? Despite its perceptions, the area is quite culturally vibrant and offers no shortage of things to see and experience. On top of this, you’ll run into some of the friendliest, most generous people you’ll ever meet. If you’re considering retiring within the Midwest, why not add Missouri to your list of options. Here are a few reasons why it may be your best choice:

1. Experience its cultural offerings—at no cost. One of Missouri’s biggest draws is its abundance of things to see and do, many of which are completely free! In fact, out of all 50 states, Missouri has the second most number of free attractions to visit, falling just short of everything there is to do in Washington, D.C. Once you’re all settled in, why not go exploring? You can easily visit the Missouri History Museum, Mother's Brewing Company, Pirtle Winery, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Boulevard Brewing Company, Forest Park, the Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park, or the Liberty Memorial.

2. Chow down on barbecue. Missourians love their barbecue. The state is well-known for its two distinct styles of barbecue: St. Louis style and Kansas City style. St. Louis style consists of ribs drowned in sauce; in fact, the city boasts the largest consumption of sauce out of any other city across the country. On the other hand, Kansas City style features a broad array of meats served with both sauce and a unique spice rub. Kansas City is also responsible for the ever-popular burnt ends, which come from beef brisket. Either way, if you’re passionate about barbecue (or just food in general), Missouri is the state to be in!

3. It’s a sports hotbed. Missouri has been the home to several sports teams in the past and even hosted the Summer Olympics in 1904. Their current teams are the St. Louis MLS team (soccer), St. Louis Cardinals (baseball), St. Louis Blues (hockey), Kansas City Chiefs (football), and Kansas City Royals (baseball). Sports fans can easily find a new team to root for after making Missouri their new home.

4. You can still enjoy city life. Missouri houses several famous major cities, including Springfield, St. Louis, and Kansas City. If you ever find yourself missing the hustle and bustle, the state’s major cities are just a drive away. Alternatively, you can choose to live in the city to get the full experience. Whatever you choose, know that there’s plenty to see and do.


5. It boasts a rich culture. Missouri serves as a formative area for a broad range of noteworthy individuals. Walt Disney spent much of his childhood years and kicked off his career within state borders, and Mark Twain was born in Missouri. The state also produced or became the home of such big names as Steve Walsh, Chuck Berry, Scott Joplin, Josephine Baker, the Doobie Brothers, and Tina Turner. Kansas is also home to the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and the Kansas City Symphony.
