Sunshine is often one of the major considerations for people who are looking for a new home to spend their retirement. Florida and Arizona are among the most obvious choices, but Georgia belongs in this mix. For a variety of solid reasons, consider the Peach State for your warm-weather retirement.
#1. Sunshine is always in season. If you want to bask in the sun, you’ll have many months of opportunities throughout the year in Georgia. While winter temps might drop at night, your days will still be much warmer than the northern climates, and just about the same as Florida residents experience. The average rainfall is only a few inches per month. For six to seven months a year, you’ll enjoy daytime temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Just say “ahhhh!”
#2. Southern living makes everything nicer. If you’ve spent your life racing the clock, you’ll appreciate the gentler, more relaxed Southern lifestyle in Georgia. Newcomers often remark about the warm hospitality, kindness, and helping hand they receive here. It’s part of the culture. From the home-cooked meals and gentle manners to the attention to every detail, Southern pride is evident everywhere.
#3. Pick your place and lifestyle. You’ve already decided you want a sunny place to retire. Well, in Georgia, you can have that and also take your pick of living spaces.Move to the ocean in the south or by one of the many lakes or rivers. Georgia also offers island living off the Atlantic coast, like Cumberland Island and St. Simons Island. If you prefer the perspective of elevated living, head towards the well-known Stone Mountain and the Blue Ridge Mountains in the north.
You can also choose between city and country living. Atlanta is Georgia’s largest city, followed by Augusta, Columbus, and Macon. Georgia’s oldest city, Savannah, sits in southeastern Georgia, on the Atlantic coast. The city offers a blend of beautiful architecture, rich history, and an endless variety of opportunities to occupy yourself during retirement—some of the many reasons Savannah is frequently named one of the best places to retire in Georgia.
Live in the city, move to a suburb, or opt for a rural lifestyle. Georgia gives you plenty of choices for any and all of the above.
#4. The PGA loves Georgia, too. Between the exceptional weather and the plethora of world-class golf courses, golfers discovermany ways to pursue their passion for the sport here. In addition to playing, you can attend PGA tournaments like the Masters Tournament at Augusta National (Augusta), the Tour Championship at East Lake (Atlanta), and the RSM Classic in Sea Island.
#5. Georgia makes it affordable to live here. The cost of living in Georgia is about 10% below the national average. The state doesn’t tax Social Security benefits, estate, or inheritance, and $65,000 of retirement income is exempt for people who are age 65 or older. Property taxes are relatively low, and Georgia residents can file for a homestead exemption, too.
Georgia is a unique southern state where you can bask in the sunshine and hospitality, and shape your own retirement lifestyle.
